Extra Ordinary

Exhibition Dates: September 14th - October 19th

Opening Reception: Friday, September 13th 2019 from 6:00pm-9:00pm

This exhibition aims to uncover the power within the mundane. What significance do the ordinary objects around you hold? Perhaps they lead double lives - hiding secrets, invoking memories, or acting as relics. Consumerism, attachment, and the domestic space are also possible subjects to explore. For this show, Embark is seeking artworks that somehow turn the ordinary into the unexpected or highlights the power of the mundane. As always, please make sure to include in your artist statement how, specifically, your submission relates to this prompt. Embark will consider artwork of any medium, including installation and performance.

Root Division is proud to present MFA Now 2019, our biennial juried exhibition and archive publication featuring the works of MFA candidates at 9 of the top Bay Area institutions.

Now in its sixth iteration, the MFA Now project provides a platform for looking at Bay Area artists and institutions in order to promote dialogue between programs and to archive current art-making practices and models. This year's exhibition will be juried by Maria Jenson, Executive Director, SOMArts.

This year’s exhibition will include the work of twenty five artists. Selected based on a single image and artist statement, the works included in this exhibition display a quality of content and execution that is indicative of the rigor of advanced art degree programs. Works range in media from large scale installation, to video, sculpture, photography and painting. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the developing practices of candidates prior to their thesis presentations.

MFA programs include: California College of the Arts, Mills College, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Davis, and University of California, Santa Cruz.
